# Audit report

> PLEA security audit, round 1, area A2: Letters and the launch: Letterbox, PleaLaunch, PLEA, PleaDistributor. PLEA is a sell-gated meme token on Uniswap v4 paired with IMD: anyone buys, selling needs a plea judged by a 30-seat IdentityMD oracle panel, approved pleas score season points for IMD and PLEA prizes, and every trade pays cashback in staked IMD through imd/acc's Stacker. Solidity 0.8.26, Foundry (cancun, via-IR), a Uniswap v4 hook, IdentityMD Intake v2 callbacks. This is the mainnet code, rehearsed first on Sepolia (launch.json on this commit has the Sepolia settings). Other areas of the same commit are audited by separate jobs; stay on this one.

> READ FIRST, in this repository:
> - audit/THREAT-MODEL.md: actors and trust, the invariants with the agreed numbers (section 2), deliberate behaviour that is NOT a finding (section 3) and the severity scale (section 4). Use that scale.
> - audit/FINDINGS.md: findings already fixed or accepted. Do not re-report them unless the fix is wrong. Check that every fix marked fixed for this area is correct and complete and opens no new path (each names its regression test).
> - README.md (the design and every number), OBJECTIONS.md (Objection!: its Known limits and Decisions are accepted behaviour).
> - Build: forge build --skip test --skip script first (under a minute), then forge test --match-path 'test/{File1,File2}.t.sol' one group at a time (FOUNDRY_PROFILE=full for the invariant, adversarial and fork suites). Never one forge build of the whole tree: one slow via-IR solc job, over a 10-minute limit. CabalGate is 83 bytes under the EIP-170 limit.

> Context: the Letterbox turns a transaction's input data (or letter(text)) into a plea for 15% of the writer's PLEA, an APPEAL, a SELL or a NAME; it escrows the PLEA, pays the fees in PLEA through the gate's fee sale (0.5 IMD oracle fee, 0.25 IMD runner tip, an appeal's 0.35 IMD wall share; at most the snapshot value + 10% and 10% of the balance), and anyone delivers an approved plea for at least 95% of its snapshot value for the tip; the site's auto-sell box (plead / appealAuto) does the same and pays the 0.35 IMD auto-sell fee from a delivered sale. PLEA is the ERC-20 with transfer gating while the Cabal lives (system senders and the owner's add-only allowlist exempt; two-step ownership), the one-time launcher registration and the one-time mint 82 / 6 / 12. PleaLaunch registers the system at launch, commits to the hook's, the Letterbox's and the Tribunal's creation code, deploys them afterwards for anyone, and opens trading (seed, with the mainnet clock check). PleaDistributor is the Merkle claim for the 12%.
> Changed since run 6 (FINDINGS.md "Run 7 changes"): letters plead 15% (LETTER_SHARE_BPS 1500, bands 15%/30%, need 71 - fact) and pay no auto-sell fee (only the site's box does; the 0.70 IMD floor stays for both); LetterTooLong(bytes, 280); the Letterbox's points line reads Seasons.pointsFor; PleaDistributor is Ownable2Step with no renounce before the root; launch.json's Seasons argument list has the seat NFT and a new Letterbox hash.
> Look hardest at:
> - Letterbox custody: can anyone move another writer's escrow or tip, settle or deliver into the wrong hands, deliver twice, deliver outside the approval window, make the Letterbox hold less than its open escrows + tips, or strand an escrow forever (PendingExists, NotSettleable, a plea the gate never answers, the death)?
> - Fees in PLEA: the fee sale's bounds (+10%, 10% of the balance, an appeal up to its own amount), unspent PLEA back, the 0.70 IMD floor at the snapshot, the auto-sell fee capped at the sale and taken only from the site's box (flags), the BY_LETTER / AUTO_SELL flags and the gate's BadFlags, minting the Sepolia oracle fee vs buying it on mainnet (MintOnMainnet, OracleAssetNotImd).
> - APPEAL letters: the target rule (_appealTarget), the same-share clamp, the 1% floor, the 0.70 raise, the gate's lesser-share band, re-sending an unanswered appeal.
> - Text handling: command words, _after, the selector rule (no function ID is valid text), letter(text) vs raw data, LetterTooLong, reentrancy through the hook or tokens during deliver / settle.
> - PLEA: every path a holder could use to move PLEA while the Cabal lives (transfer, transferFrom, the PoolManager, the gate, the Letterbox, allowlisted senders), setLauncher's registration window (the deploy transaction's flag or PLEA's deployment block), init once, burn, two-step ownership and the exclusion Seasons reads.
> - PleaLaunch: the committed code hashes, CREATE2 addresses and front-running, deployHook's flag check, seed once (owner before START, anyone after), the chain-1 clock check, a wrong or zero hash, the launch gas (test/LaunchManifest.t.sol) against the 16,777,216 cap with 22% headroom.
> - PleaDistributor: leaf encoding, double claims, the bitmap, a root set twice, the renounce guard.
>

Four agents audited the code as it is at `cd88136`, each in one area (math, permissions, economics, control flow),
and a judge reproduced, merged and ranked what they found, then read the code once more itself. Nothing in the repository was changed or deployed.

## Findings

### 1. Medium: appealAuto has no 0.70 IMD floor: the appeal of a sub-floor gate plea is delivered with the whole sale taken as the auto-sell fee and nothing paid to the writer

`src/Letterbox.sol:328`

```
            amount = floorAmount < originalAmount ? floorAmount : originalAmount;
```

THREAT-MODEL invariant 15 says every plea through the Letterbox must be worth at least 0.70 IMD at the snapshot, and the contract header (lines 68-69) and README say a plea under 0.70 IMD is refused 'so a fee can never eat a sale'. `_plead` enforces that with `_requireWorthTheFee`; `_appeal` does not. Its floor raise is capped at `originalAmount`, and the original may have been submitted directly at `CabalGate.submitSell`, which has no value floor (its minimum is 1% of the balance). The site's `appealAuto(originalId, text)` therefore opens an AUTO_SELL escrow worth well under 0.35 IMD; when the panel approves it, `_deliver` (line 384) sets `fee = sold` because `sold < AUTO_SELL_FEE`, and `out = 0`: the whole sale goes to the season pot and the writer, who also spent ~0.66 IMD worth of PLEA on the appeal's fees, receives nothing. `status()` then shows 'SOLD' with no amount. The loss is bounded (at most 0.35 IMD, of the writer's own sale, on a path the writer chose), but it is a concrete violation of invariant 15 and of the stated 'never eats a sale' rule, reachable by any holder who pleads 1% at the gate and appeals from the site's box. Fix (minimal, keeps the design): in `_appeal`, when the raise cannot reach the floor (amount < floorAmount after the clamp), call `_requireWorthTheFee(amount)` so the appeal is refused exactly like a sub-floor plea; or waive the fee when `sold <= AUTO_SELL_FEE` so a delivered sale always pays the writer something. Note the same `fee = sold` branch also applies to a floor-sized plea whose price more than halves between the two snapshots (acknowledged in the comment at lines 378-381); that is a documented edge, this one is not.

**Reproduction**

Fixture (Sepolia fee path, test/utils/Fixture.sol), alice buys 20 IMD of PLEA, bob 50 IMD, one day passes. 1) alice calls gate.submitSell(bal/100, text): the 1% plea is worth 0.195 IMD at the snapshot (logged: 195250678771660814 wei) and the gate accepts it (no floor). The panel answers 0: Denied. 2) alice calls letterbox.appealAuto(id, text) inside the 4-hour cooldown: amount stays bal/100 (floorAmount > originalAmount, so the raise is capped at the original), escrow opens with flags 2, need 35. 3) The panel answers 45: Approved. 4) bob calls letterbox.deliver(appealId). Expected (invariant 15, Letterbox.sol:68-69): the appeal is refused as worth under 0.70 IMD, or the writer receives the sale. Actual: sold = 0.1975 IMD, fee = 0.1975 IMD to Seasons, out = 0, alice's IMD balance unchanged, escrowOf(appealId).soldFor == 0, status(alice) = 'Appeal #2 · SOLD · +45 points (season 1, rank 1) · ...'. Reproduced with test/scratch/JudgeA2.t.sol test_appealAutoOfASubFloorGatePleaDeliversNothing (passes on this code, asserting out == 0); source:

### 2. Low: PleaLaunch.seed grants the early-seed power to the PLEA owner frozen at launch, not to PLEA's current owner: after a two-step handover the former owner can still open trading before START and the new

`src/PleaLaunch.sol:181`

```
        if (msg.sender != owner && block.timestamp < START) revert TooEarly(START);
```

THREAT-MODEL section 1 lists `PleaLaunch.seed()` before START as a power of 'the PLEA owner (PLEA.owner, Ownable2Step)' and says the launch owner (the hook's immutable fee beneficiary) has 'no other power'; README step 4 says 'the owner may call it any time'. PleaLaunch copies `IPLEAForLaunch(plea_).owner()` once into the immutable `owner` (lines 100-101) and `seed` compares `msg.sender` with that snapshot. After `PLEA.transferOwnership(B)` + `B.acceptOwnership()` before START, B (PLEA's owner) is refused `TooEarly` while A (no longer any PLEA role) can open trading at any moment before START. The trust map and the code disagree on who holds a listed power; launch.json's notes say the opposite of THREAT-MODEL ('the launch owner may call any time after hook deployment'). Impact is bounded to choosing the opening time inside the launch-to-START window (both wallets are the team's; anyone may seed from START; `hook.seed()` / `gate.begin()` are one-shot), so Low. Merged from four specialist reports (flow, economics, math, permissions). Fix: compare against `IPLEAForLaunch(plea).owner()` at call time (one external view; keep the immutable `owner` for the hook's init-code commitment), or amend THREAT-MODEL section 1 and README to say the launch-time owner.

**Reproduction**

Deploy PLEA(A) and a PleaLaunch with START = now + 1 day (mock gate and hook, or the full fixture); deploy or set the hook. A: plea.transferOwnership(B); B: plea.acceptOwnership(); plea.owner() == B. B calls launch.seed() at a timestamp < START: expected (THREAT-MODEL section 1) trading opens; actual revert TooEarly(START). A calls launch.seed(): expected TooEarly; actual it succeeds and the Cabal begins. Reproduced with the specialists' proofs copied to test/scratch/SeedOwner.t.sol (FAIL: TooEarly(86401) and 'next call did not revert as expected') and test/scratch/SeedOwnerSnapshot.t.sol (full fixture, FAIL: 'next call did not revert as expected'); both pass once seed reads PLEA.owner() live.

**Proof**: a Foundry test that fails on this code and passes once it is fixed.

### 3. Low: Mainnet fee path: a writer who could plead by letter cannot always appeal by letter (FeeTooHigh for balances worth about 8.25-8.6 IMD), against the rule stated above the check

`src/Letterbox.sol:335`

```
        if (maxFeePlea * BPS > bal * MAX_FEE_SHARE_BPS && maxFeePlea > amount) revert FeeTooHigh(maxFeePlea, bal);
```

The comment at lines 333-334 states the guarantee the exception is meant to give: 'whoever could plead by letter (a plea worth at least 0.70 IMD) can always appeal by letter', and README repeats it. On Sepolia the appeal's fee sale buys 0.60 IMD (0.66 with the +10% cap), under the 0.70 IMD floor the raise restores, so the guarantee holds. On mainnet (oracle fee bought with PLEA) the appeal buys 0.5 + 0.35 + 0.25 = 1.10 IMD, 1.21 IMD worth of PLEA with the cap. A letter is accepted from about 8.25 IMD worth of PLEA (its 0.825 IMD fee cap is 10% of the balance) and pleads 15% (about 1.24 IMD). After the letter's fee sale the balance is about 7.5 IMD worth; the same-share clamp makes the appeal about 1.12 IMD worth, under the 1.21 IMD fee cap, and 10% of the balance (0.75) is under it too, so the APPEAL letter reverts FeeTooHigh. The band closes around 8.6 IMD, and widens again whenever the price falls between the letter and the appeal (the clamp shrinks the appeal while the fee in PLEA grows). No loss of funds: the writer can appeal at the gate paying IMD, or not at all without IMD. A stated guarantee that does not hold on the mainnet code. Fix: compute the appeal exception against the original's amount or the floor's worth rather than the clamped appeal amount, or document the mainnet minimum for an appeal by letter.

**Reproduction**

Fixture with the mainnet fee path (oracleFeeToken() == pool IMD, as in test/Letterbox.t.sol LetterboxMainnetPathTest): bob buys 50 IMD of PLEA; alice buys 8.7 IMD; one day passes. 1) alice sends a plain letter: accepted, plea for 15%. 2) The panel answers 0: Denied. 3) alice sends 'APPEAL The phone is how I work; I keep the rest.' inside the 4-hour cooldown. Expected (Letterbox.sol:333-334): accepted. Actual: revert FeeTooHigh(maxFeePlea = 206,400e18 PLEA, bal = 1,108,345e18 PLEA) (return data 0xe757126a… logged). Reproduced with test/scratch/JudgeA2.t.sol JudgeA2MainnetTest.test_aWriterWhoCouldPleadByLetterCannotAlwaysAppealByLetter (passes on this code, asserting the FeeTooHigh selector).

### 4. Low: status() gives a lapsed approval no escrow note, and the note's 'send a letter' hint reverts Cooldown for 4 hours after a lapse or a denial

`src/Letterbox.sol:564`

```
            return string.concat(head, "LAPSED", vs, unicode" · ", _points(w, id, p), unicode" · ", _next(w, id));
```

A letter plea approved but not delivered inside the 7-minute window leaves its PLEA and 0.25 IMD tip in the Letterbox until someone calls `settle`. The LAPSED branch of `status()` prints the points and the cooldown but never `_escrowNote(id)`, unlike the DENIED and NO VERDICT branches (lines 557, 561, 566), so a writer reading the explorer sees no sign that their 15% is still escrowed. The note those other branches print, 'call settle or send a letter to get your PLEA back', is also only half right during the 4-hour cooldown a lapse or a denial starts: a plain letter runs `_settleOpen` and then `gate.submitFor` reverts `Cooldown`, so the whole transaction reverts and the escrow stays open; only `settle` (anyone) or an APPEAL letter (denied case) returns it before the cooldown ends. Display text only (THREAT-MODEL section 4: Low); custody is unaffected. Fix: append `_escrowNote(id)` in the LAPSED branch and word the note as 'call settle (a new plea is refused for 4 hours)'.

**Reproduction**

Fixture: alice buys 20 IMD of PLEA, one day passes, sends the letter 'Fifteen percent for a vet bill; the rest stays with me this season.' (need 35); the panel answers 45 (Approved); 7 minutes + 1 second pass, nobody delivers. letterbox.escrowOf(id).open == true. letterbox.status(alice) returns 'Plea #1 · LAPSED (45 vs 35) · +45 points once recorded · Cooldown until 13:31 UTC' with no escrow note. alice sends a second plain letter: the call fails (CabalGate.Cooldown) and the escrow is still open; letterbox.settle(id) by anyone then closes it. Reproduced with test/scratch/JudgeA2.t.sol test_lapsedStatusHasNoEscrowNoteAndAPlainLetterRevertsCooldown.

### 5. Low: status() rebuilds a recorded plea's points with the seat multiplier read now, not the points Seasons recorded

`src/Letterbox.sol:641`

```
            string.concat("+", Strings.toString(seasons.pointsFor(w, lowest < p.score ? lowest : p.score)), " points");
```

Invariant 7 and section 3 fix the seat multiplier at record time (`Seasons._record` stores `pointsFor(seller, score)` once; a seat sold after the recording keeps the points). `Letterbox._points` builds the SOLD / LAPSED line for an already recorded plea (the `seasons.recorded(id)` branch from line 649) from `seasons.pointsFor(w, score)`, which calls `holdsSeat(w)` at view time, and Seasons exposes no per-plea stored points to read instead (only `recorded` and the SeatMultiplier event). So the explorer status disagrees with what the season counts whenever the seat holding changed after the recording, in either direction. Display only (Seasons' ranking is right). Fix: for a recorded plea show the stored points (have Seasons keep per-plea points, or read the leaderboard entry's points), and keep `pointsFor` only for the 'once recorded' estimate.

**Reproduction**

Fixture: seat.mint(alice) (one seat NFT); alice buys 20 IMD, one day passes, sends a plain letter, the panel answers 45, bob delivers it (no Tribunal, so the delivery records 54 points). letterbox.status(alice) = 'Plea #1 · SOLD for 2.95 IMD · +54 points (season 1, rank 1) · …'. seat.burn(alice). letterbox.status(alice) = '… +45 points (season 1, rank 1) …' although Seasons counts 54. Reproduced with test/scratch/JudgeA2.t.sol test_statusShowsLivePointsNotRecordedPoints.

### 6. Info: setName is the one Letterbox entry point without nonReentrant, although invariant 16 says all entry points are

`src/Letterbox.sol:220`

```
    function setName(string calldata name) external {
```

THREAT-MODEL invariant 16: 'all entry points are non-reentrant'. `setName` has no `nonReentrant` while `fallback`, `letter`, `plead`, `appealAuto`, `deliver` and `settle` carry it. It makes no external call and touches only `_names` / `nameOwner`, and no untrusted code runs inside a Letterbox call today, so there is no exploitable path; the stated invariant and the code disagree. Fix: add `nonReentrant` (it shares the transient guard with the NAME letter path) or narrow the invariant's wording.

**Reproduction**

Read src/Letterbox.sol:220 against lines 178, 184, 206, 212, 264, 271: six entry points carry `nonReentrant`, `setName` does not. No value at risk.

### 7. Info: PleaDistributor.setMerkleRoot accepts bytes32(0), which emits RootSet(0) and leaves the one-shot root settable again

`src/PleaDistributor.sol:40`

```
        if (merkleRoot != bytes32(0)) revert RootAlreadySet();
```

The 'set once' guard treats a zero root as 'not set', so `setMerkleRoot(bytes32(0))` succeeds, emits `RootSet(0)` and leaves `merkleRoot` zero; the owner can then call `setMerkleRoot` again with a real root. No funds at risk (a zero root makes every claim revert RootNotSet and the renounce guard still holds), owner only. A `if (root == bytes32(0)) revert` would make invariant 18's 'one root, set once' exact and avoid a misleading event.

**Reproduction**

Owner calls distributor.setMerkleRoot(bytes32(0)): succeeds, merkleRoot() == 0; a second setMerkleRoot(bytes32(uint256(1))) succeeds and merkleRoot() == 1. Reproduced with test/scratch/JudgeA2.t.sol test_zeroRootDoesNotConsumeTheOneShot.

### 8. Info: The launch transaction sits 329,460 gas (about 2%) under the 16,777,216 cap once IMD's 22% headroom is applied

`src/PleaLaunch.sol:104`

```
                type(PleaHook).creationCode,
```

Invariant 17 holds on this commit: test/LaunchManifest.t.sol measures the five-contract manifest through IMD's factory at 13,481,768 gas, 16,447,756 with the 1.22 headroom, 329,460 under the cap. PleaLaunch embeds the whole PleaHook creation code to commit to its hash, so its own init code dominates the transaction; any further growth of PleaHook, PleaLaunch, CabalGate (83 bytes under EIP-170) or Seasons eats that margin, and the mainnet branch's constructor arguments are not what this test measures. Not a defect; a fragility to keep measuring on the mainnet branch. Committing `keccak256` of the hook's init code computed off chain as a constructor argument (as is done for the Letterbox and the Tribunal) would remove most of the hook's ~5M gas from the launch transaction. Merged from the flow and math reports.

**Reproduction**

forge test --match-path test/LaunchManifest.t.sol -vv prints: five-contract launch transaction gas through IMD's factory: 13481768; gas limit with IMD's headroom: 16447756; margin to the 16,777,216 cap: 329460 (run on this commit).

### 9. Info: Letterbox tests still name and narrate the pre-run-7 10% letter share

`test/Letterbox.t.sol:106`

```
    function test_letterPleadsTenPercentPaysFeesInPleaAndEscrows() public {
```

Run 7 moved LETTER_SHARE_BPS to 1,500 (15%). The regression test guarding the agreed number is still called test_letterPleadsTenPercent…, and the sample letters in test/Letterbox.t.sol (lines 114, 251, 450, 466, 857) and test/LetterboxInvariant.t.sol line 20 still say 'a tenth' / 'Ten percent'. The assertions use `bal * 15 / 100`, so they pass; only the names mislead a reader checking the agreed numbers. Rename to FifteenPercent and update the sample texts.

**Reproduction**

grep -n 'TenPercent\|One tenth\|Ten percent\|a tenth' test/Letterbox.t.sol test/LetterboxInvariant.t.sol lists the stale names; src/Letterbox.sol:106 reads LETTER_SHARE_BPS = 1_500 and the test at line 118 asserts p.amount == bal * 15 / 100.
