      "impression": "Rich, confident headdress with lovely colour; the drapes take it past a plain hat, but it is still mainly headwear with the pet's face and body fully on show."

      "entry": "B",
      "observation": "A glossy blue shark with dorsal fin, tail fin, gill lines, a white belly and its own dark eye; no ordinary pet head or body is readable, only a few thin dark marks near the lower jaw.",
      "impression": "A complete transformation that looks nothing like a hat. Clean and instantly recognisable, though it is one simple idea with no props."

      "entry": "C",
      "observation": "A lime-green alien helmet with purple studs, two purple ball-tipped antennae, and a clear visor bubble that encloses the pet's face while the legs stay exposed.",
      "impression": "Tidy and charming, and the see-through visor is a nice touch, but it is a single head piece with a familiar concept."

      "entry": "D",
      "observation": "A rainbow unicorn set: a spiral horn, white ears and a jewelled band on a pastel mane, a long curled rainbow tail or ponytail at lower right, and a star-tipped wand with sparkles floating at left.",
      "impression": "A coordinated multi-piece look with a real prop. Pretty and clearly themed, though the pet reads as wearing a wig and accessories rather than as having become a unicorn."

    {
      "entry": "E",
      "observation": "An oversized glossy gold foam-finger-style hand with the index finger raised and the thumb out, sitting on top of a fully visible Doge-shaped pet and nearly as tall as the pet itself.",
      "impression": "The funniest and boldest gag here, and very unlike a normal hat, but it is one object placed on the head and the pet is otherwise undressed."
    },
    {
      "entry": "F",
      "observation": "An orange cat-like flame creature with fire at its ears and tail sits in a stacked red ring-shaped tub in front of a Pepe-shaped pet, which is otherwise uncovered behind it.",
      "impression": "Odd and inventive because it adds a second character rather than headwear. However, it reads as something standing beside the pet, not as a costume on it, and the concept is unclear to me."

    {
      "entry": "G",
      "observation": "A dark witch-style hat with a bent tip, jagged points around the crown and a gold 'S' with small gold flecks on the front, worn on a fully visible cat-shaped pet.",
      "impression": "Neatly drawn, but the most ordinary entry: a single hat on an undisguised pet with no further costume."

    {
      "entry": "H",
      "observation": "A near-black rounded cloak hides the entire pet, with a pointed tip at upper left and a pale emblem in the dark opening, and a long wooden-handled, silver-bladed scythe leans across the right side.",
      "impression": "A strong reaper silhouette with a visible prop and a very seasonal idea. The cloak is a heavy dark mass with little internal detail, so it wins on concept more than craft."

    {
      "entry": "I",
      "observation": "Red lacquered samurai armour with gold crescent helmet horns, a central gold crest, a grey-trimmed face mask, and layered red shoulder and side plates down the torso; only the pet's black feet and lower body show beneath it.",
      "impression": "The most finely worked outfit in the contest. It reads as a small warrior dressed in full armour, not as a pet in a hat."

  "firstChoice": "I",
  "secondChoice": "B",
  "firstChoiceReason": "Entry I makes the pet look truly dressed rather than hatted. Helmet, crest, mask and layered armour plates form one coordinated head-to-torso outfit, the concept is instantly recognisable, and the detail is purposeful and well executed. The pet's feet showing beneath it add to the impression of a small figure wearing the armour.",
  "secondChoiceReason": "Entry B is the most complete transformation in the field and the clearest example of making something as unlike a hat as possible. It is polished and instantly readable as a shark. It falls behind I only because it is a single, simpler idea, without I's layered detail.",
  "uncertainty": "Closest choices: I over B (a dressed-up costume against a full transformation) and B over H (polish against a prop and Halloween concept). E, C and F were also hard to order among themselves. E's gag is more memorable than C's neater helmet, and F's unusual idea could rank higher for a judge who reads it as a deliberate puppet or companion. What H's pale emblem depicts, what F's concept is meant to be, and whether I's black lower body is costume or pet could not be settled from the image. None of these changed my order.",
  "limitation": "No limitation prevented judging. Both images opened and all nine entries were legible, including when enlarged. Sprites are small and the collage is slightly soft, so the finest details are less certain."
